Helping those in our community has been a focus of NCJW Atlanta since its founding.
Whether assisting those fleeing domestic violence or wars or brightening the lives of children, the homeless or new mothers, Atlanta Section members selflessly step up en mass to assist women, children, and families in times of need.
Each August, NCJW Atlanta Section donates more than 100 backpacks and requested school supplies for a year to the neediest children at one of our Title 1 elementary schools.
We also collect needed school supplies for new immigrants and partner agencies. Donations of school supplies are collected year-round at the NCJW office.
NCJW Atlanta works throughout the year with partner agencies to support their efforts serving the needs and rights of Atlanta’s mothers and their infants.
One of NCJW Atlanta Section’s most popular projects is our annual Mother’s Day “Pop-Up” Jewelry Shops held the week before Mother’s Day in several area Title 1 elementary schools.
Section members set up and volunteer at these “shops,” where each child picks out a piece of donated costume jewelry to give their special person.
Each year, several thousand children in grades K-5 visit the “shops!” Faculty members also are invited to select a piece of jewelry for themselves.
Donations of costume jewelry are accepted year-round at the NCJW office.
Volunteers are needed throughout the year to help clean and package thousands of pieces of donated jewelry as well as to help on the shopping day.
NCJW’s Atlanta Section has been welcoming immigrants to our community and helping them settle into their new lives for more than 120 years.
We’ve helped immigrants fleeing persecution and war—teaching them English, helping them secure housing, assisting them as they navigated their new world.
This compassion continues to this day as we “welcome the stranger” from other lands as their needs arise.
In 2021, when Afghan refugee families arrived in Atlanta, our members assembled and delivered to them 80 “welcome bags” filled with items such as Halal foods, toiletries, scarves, toys, Dari/Pasho/English dictionaries, and gift cards for clothes.
Within days of the outbreak of the war in Ukraine in February 2022, NCJW Atlanta leaders reached out to our members for donations of clothing, linens, and medical supplies—all badly needed by Ukrainians overseas.
In one day, our members filled 32 large packing boxes that were shipped to those in need.
Just weeks later, when many Ukrainian refugees escaping the war arrived in Atlanta, NCJW Atlanta members stepped up to help furnish apartments, provide clothing and toys, and work directly with these newcomers.
NCJW Atlanta Section’s Mitzvot in Motion initiative offers our members opportunities throughout the year to participate in good deed projects that take only an hour or two of their time yet reap big rewards to those in need.
The Sandwich Project (TSP) is an Atlanta-based non-profit organization founded during the Covid-19 pandemic to address the increased needs for food assistance.
TSP supports more than 30 local organizations who continue to combat homelessness and food insecurity.

In 2007, the Atlanta Jewish Coalition for Literacy (AJCL) was integrated into NCJW Atlanta Section, becoming a vital component of the section’s community service work.
Since then, Atlanta Section has placed several hundred volunteer tutors in several Atlanta Title 1 schools to work with children in grades K-3, enriching their lives with the love of reading and opportunities for future success.
Reading tutors generally commit to one half hour of tutoring each week.
Our tutors come from all faiths, educational backgrounds, and experiences.
No prior tutoring or teaching experience necessary! Note: Background checks are required by the schools for all tutors.
